Every time I think political ads can’t get more strange, they do. And the folks who oppose Proposal 2 in Michigan have set the bar at a whole new level.

Their latest ad claims passing Prop 2, which would expand embryonic stem cell research in Michigan, will allow the mixing of animal and human genetic material and result in the creation of human/animal hybrids. To make their point, these funny folks set up a camera at the back of a faux classroom filled with students and one cow, which raises its hoof to ask a question of the professor.

Except that it’s not funny at all to allege that Michigan’s scientific research community would waste valuable stem cell research dollars to pursue creating a bovine/human hybrid, rather than cures for disease. And it’s not funny at all that churches are behind these ads, which deliberately mislead voters about the text of Proposal 2.

The language of the proposal specifically limits research to what is allowed by federal law. It prohibits any person from selling or purchasing human embryos for stem cell research.
